It gets so bad on my PCs that it freezes everything on the computer and I have to walk away until it unfreezes, then I go to online access for my email accounts...which I don't like. I've used Thunderbird probably for as long as it's existed and I have never found another email client that I like better or even as well. This started a couple years ago and I thought it was my computer (desktop PC). I wondered if the problem happened after an update, but was unable to target the exact date to try to link it to an update. And it really freezes your PC, not just Thunderbird? Please start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - - win8 - win7 Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - Does problem go away? If I'm patient (not my long suit) it will eventually respond. Most of the time when that happens, I can't even close the window or close TB through Task Manager. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird: Testing: Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues documents that Trend Micro has been an issue in the past.

2 years ago I added a Mac Air to my computers, installed Thunderbird and it has worked without a hitch..email accounts, same settings, same everything. I spent a "bit" of time with Trend Micro Support over a couple days. Something I forgot to mention is that this happens most often when it is downloading a new message, sending a message, etc., in other words, doing something else at the time. If I'm patient (not my long suit) it will eventually respond. Since it's nearing midnight where I am, I will wait until tomorrow to reboot and give safe mode a try and will post my results. I posted earlier today: "I booted in Safe Mode and have been using my computer (PC Laptop) as I normally would for the best part of an hour...including sending and receiving emails. I will check in with Trend though..if they've any known conflicts with Thunderbird on PCs. Please post your findings so we know if they have a better solution than Testing: Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues documents that Trend Micro has been an issue in the past.

Clearly, something in Mac prevents what's happening with Windows/or, inversely, something in Windows is causing it to happen.

Thanks again for offers of help, and, again, my apology for not posting my activities sooner.

It gets so bad on my PCs that it freezes everything on the computer and I have to walk away until it unfreezes, then I go to online access for my email accounts...which I don't like. Ultimately, their suggestion was to add Thunderbird to the Exceptions List. So, for example, if I'm typing a message, and it starts to retrieve new messages, I can't type another letter until it decides to respond. Something I forgot to mention is that this happens most often when it is downloading a new message, sending a message, etc., in other words, doing something else at the time. I also failed to mention I'm running W7 Home Premium on both the desktop and laptop PCs. Hello again Wayne, I booted in Safe Mode and have been using my computer (PC Laptop) as I normally would for the best part of an hour...including sending and receiving emails. So how do I figure out what is conflicting with it to cause the problem? Hello again Wayne, I booted in Safe Mode and have been using my computer (PC Laptop) as I normally would for the best part of an hour...including sending and receiving emails. So how do I figure out what is conflicting with it to cause the problem? TB is working without a hitch..it does on my MAC." I did do safe mode and TB did work fine. Please post your findings so we know if they have a better solution than now, running in regular Windows mode, I have Trend Micro shut off and TB is working fine. I'll pursue this with TM and will definitely post whatever I find out.

I did that tonight and, so far, TB seems to be running OK. you just open the main console, click on Settings (the Gear icon), then Exceptions Lists, Programs/folders, click add, then navigate to and add it. So, for example, if I'm typing a message, and it starts to retrieve new messages, I can't type another letter until it decides to respond. I posted earlier today: "I booted in Safe Mode and have been using my computer (PC Laptop) as I normally would for the best part of an hour...including sending and receiving emails. I'm very grateful for the input and being pointed in the right direction! Right now, running in regular Windows mode, I have Trend Micro shut off and TB is working fine. I'll pursue this with TM and will definitely post whatever I find out.

I then told him about my experience and he didn't seem overly concerned at all.

I had to really emphasize the fact that I purchased this pack from a very large, well known chain and it was obviously a scam.

I thought this was possible since my computer was like new and I hadn't done anything to it yet.

Totally up to you of course, but if Trend Micro is otherwise working fine, you needn't ditch it.

By manually adding the exclusion, you are only doing what Trend Micro should itself be doing automatically, and you are not putting your computer at risk. Sorry for my delay in updating my efforts to solve my problem. After many support "chats" and following their tiresome instructions (everything I had already done) there was no resolution and I ran out of patience.
